How To Make A Reed Diffuser

A reed diffuser is one of the easiest, flame-free ways to fragrance your home. Instead of lighting a candle or using a plug-in device, a reed diffuser continuously releases scent through porous reeds soaked in fragrance oil. For many, it offers low-maintenance, elegant alternatives.

What Is a Reed Diffuser & How It Works

A reed diffuser consists of a vessel (bottle or jar), a fragrant oil blend (carrier + fragrance), and porous sticks (usually rattan). The reeds act like capillary “wicks” — the oil is drawn up through microscopic channels in the reeds and evaporates at the top, dispersing scent into the air.

Because it does not require heat or flame, a reed diffuser is safer, quieter, and more consistent (no “burning out”) compared to candles.

What is the ratio for Reed Diffusers?

It is recommended to use an 80% Reed Diffuser base and 20% of Fragrance oil. This gives a strong, consistent scent without clogging the reeds or causing excessive evaporation.

Make Sure You Have:

Step One: Measure out the diffuser base into a measuring jug.

Step Two: Measure out your fragrance oil and combine it with your diffuser base. Give it a good stir to make sure the fragrance oil and diffuser base.

Step Three: Pour your now mixed diffuser base into the diffuser bottle

Step Four: Dip your reed diffuser and flip it upside down and leave it in. And that’s it!

FQA

How many reeds should I use?

It depends on the vessel size and desired scent strength. A typical range is 5–8 reeds for a small to medium diffuser. More reeds diffuse scent faster but shorten lifespan.

Can I use essential oils instead of fragrance oils?

Yes, many DIY diffusers use essential oils. But essential oils may be more volatile, weaker in “throw,” or may not last as long. Always test your blend.

How often should I flip or turn the reeds?

Once a week or whenever the scent seems to fade is a good rule. Flipping exposes fresh surface to air.

Can I reuse the same reeds when refilling?

It’s better to clean or replace reeds. Over time reeds accumulate residue, clog channels, and lose their ability to draw up oil efficiently.

Can I gift or sell homemade reed diffusers?

Yes, but you must ensure compliance with local cosmetic or home fragrance regulations. Label all ingredients, follow safety guidelines, and maintain documentation (e.g. ingredient safety data).
